Much like their last match against FC Orenburg, Zenit St. Petersburg face a newly-promoted side at home in the form of Tom Tomsk. Once again there is only one winner on the cards here and it is all about finding value.

Although it was not the most convincing win against Orenburg on Monday night, The three points earned by Zenit against their fellow Gazprom-sponsored team was enough to take them to second in the Russian Premier League, behind Spartak Moscow only on the number of games won.

Mirecea Lucescu’s team are still the only unbeaten side in the Russian Premier League and are the top scorers in both their domestic league and the Europa League. You would say that makes for pretty rosy reading.

However, following their unconvincing 1-0 victory against FC Orenburg on Monday, a strong Zenit team succumbed to a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of Anzhi Makhachkala in the Russian Cup on Thursday night.

The Blue, White and Navys were not helped by the fact they were playing with 10 men for most of the second half after goalkeeper Mikhail Kerzhakov was controversially dismissed just before the hour mark. Zenit were already 1-0 down at this point, but they then collapsed after the sending off and conceded another three goals. The match then ended in chaos as Anzhi’s Ali Gadzhibekov and Zenit’s Giuliano were sent off in a brawl at the end.

Thankfully for Zenit, cup red cards do not mean a suspension in the league and so the talismanic Brazilian Giuliano will be available for Sunday’s match against Tom Tomsk.

Lucescu will hope that they can quickly put the farce of that cup defeat behind them and be top of the league on Sunday evening following a nice easy win against Tomsk.

Whilst it may sound complacent, we should expect no less from Zenit as they are by far and away the best team in the league and have won their last four matches at the Petrovsky. As mentioned in the introduction – only one result on the cards here.

What makes a Zenit win more inevitable is the poor form of opponent Tom Tomsk. The Siberian side are third from bottom and have been on a dismal run in recent weeks with just one point taken from a possible 12 in the last four matches. Their defence is the worst in the league with 19 goals conceded in just 11 games – incredible when you consider how conservative the Russian Premier League is. The fact that FC Orenburg, who have only scored six goals all season, put three passed Tomsk shows how poor their defence is.

I really do not hold out any hope for Valery Petrakov’s side and they could be on the end of a real thrashing on Sunday. Orenburg managed to limit Zenit to just the one goal because they actually have a capable defence – something which Tomsk do not have.

Additionally, the White-Greens are terrible away from home with four consecutive losses and they have taken just one point back to Siberia from away trips all season.

Again, it is about finding value on the market here and thankfully there is some money to be made despite this fixture being so one-sided.

Firstly, I would go with ‘Zenit to Win to Nil’ at 19/20. Although it is odds against, I still think the value here is incredible. The home side will just be too powerful and, although there are a couple of question marks over their back-line, I cannot see an inept Tomsk side troubling their goal.

Additionally, the Siberian side have only scored in three matches at the Petrovsky in their last eight visits to the stadium.

Secondly, ‘Over 3.5 Goals’, at 13/8, is very appealing. Of course I expect Zenit to score four goals themselves, but you never know in football and a surprise Tomsk goal will only help.

Finally, I am backing ‘Zenit to Win Both Halves’ at 6/4. With the home side’s attacking talent and the slackness of Tomsk’s defence, Zenit should be entering the dressing room ahead at the end of both the first and second half.
