These two sides are having vastly different seasons with Zenit second from top and Orenburg second from bottom. There really is only one result on the cards here and, if you are a cynic, you can pretty much guarantee that result with the murky off-field issues in Russian football.

Both of these teams are financed by Gazprom (in a way that is somehow legal thanks to subsidiary companies) and many suspect that this fact will have a lot to do with the result here. The energy company really use Zenit to push their brand and some are saying that Orenburg are simply in the league to guarantee Zenit six points this season.

Mircea Lucescu’s men have won their last four home matches in all competitions with an impressive 16 goals scored and just three conceded.

Two of the top three Russian Premier League goalscorers (Giuliano and Artem Dzyuba) are Zenit players and the club are not only the top goalscorers in the league by a distance (24), but also in the Europa League where they have found the back of the net 11 times in their three wins.

Defence is usually a bit of a concern with Zenit with their open style prone to punishment by the bigger sides, however, I do not think Orenburg will be able to get enough going to trouble the hosts’ back-line.

I actually thought Orenburg had a decent chance of getting out of relegation trouble a few weeks ago after they drew four matches in a row from mid-August to mid-September. I felt that, with their decent defence, if they could just find a way of scoring more goals then they would be OK. However, form plummeted following these draws with three consecutive losses and thus my confidence in them has faded somewhat. Having said that, they picked up an invaluable win against relegation rivals Tom Tomsk last weekend.

That first victory of the season will be a huge boost to Robert Yevdokimov’s men, it is just a shame for them that they go to Zenit away next rather than face a relegation rival at home.

Whilst the Orenburg defence looks pretty solid, they are yet to be tested against a side with such a good front-line as Zenit and I fear for them here – especially being away from home.

Additionally, as previously mentioned, given the ownership connections between these two clubs, who knows what has been whispered in Orenburg ears…

In terms of the betting it is absolutely impossible to look passed a convincing Zenit win, but it is a matter of finding value.

With this in mind, the places to look are the goal markets. Firstl up is ‘Zenit to Score Over 2.5 goals’ at 11/10. As mentioned above, the hosts have been in strong scoring form this campaign and, against an inferior Orenburg side, they should be able to fill their boots once more.

Secondly, ‘Zenit to Win & Over 3.5 Goals’ is another good bet. As I said above, I fully expect Zenit to score this many themselves but luckily this bet allows Orenburg to score a surprise away goal in what is an inevitable Zenit win.

Finally, the third bet to go for is ‘Zenit to Win & Giuliano to Score Anytime’ at 6/5. Of course the main variable here is Giuliano, but I am confident that the Brazilian can continue his excellent form against this shaky looking defence.

The former Gremio man used to be a great simple ‘Anytime Scorer’ bet, but the bookies soon caught up with his amazing record of 10 goals in all competitions already this season. He should once again have a lot of chances as Zenit will likely be camped in the Orenburg half for most of the 90 minutes. I fully expect the 26-year-old to score and keep up his reputation as the best player in Russia right now.
