Southampton vs Chelsea Prediction & Top tips

Bookmaker Ratings prediction one: Chelsea to Win – 1.8

Bookmaker Ratings prediction two: Both Teams to Score – 1.8

Chelsea to Win

Chelsea were humbled at home by Brentford in their last Premier League fixture, though the Blues are worth backing to rebound with a victory at struggling Saints. Southampton have lost four of their last five matches in all competitions and on Saturday, they will be without the services of on loan star striker Armando Broja, who cannot play against his parent club.

Both Teams to Score

Five of the last six encounters between Southampton and Chelsea have produced goals at both ends and the same market could be worth pursuing again when the sides clash on Saturday. The Saints have traded blows with their opponents in five of their last six assignments, while BTTS has also landed in 11 of their last 14 Premier League fixtures since early December.

Southampton vs Chelsea – Latest Team Stats & Odds

Preliminary review and match prediction for Southampton vs Chelsea

With their FA Cup dreams in tatters and a haul of just one point from the last 12 on offer in the Premier League, Southampton seem to be running out of gas and with little to play for between now and May, motivation could well become an issue for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side.

The Saints’ earned a 1-1 draw at Leeds in their last league test, though James Ward-Prowse’s second half equalizer was only their fourth goal in five matches and Southampton’s edge in the final third has looked decidedly blunt.

Their prowess up top will be further limited by the absence of striker Armando Broja on Saturday. The Albanian forward is on loan at Southampton from Chelsea for the duration of the season and cannot feature against his parent club in accordance with Premier League rules.

Thomas Tuchel’s Blues were already favourites to prevail at St. Mary’s Stadium this weekend, though Broja’s omission heightens their chances of success even more.

Tuchel was understandably critical of his players’ performance after Chelsea were taken apart by an unfancied Brentford team at Stamford Bridge last weekend, though few had seen that 4-1 reverse coming after a run of six straight wins for the Londoners before that.

Chelsea’s position in third spot is suddenly under threat, particularly from a rapidly-improving Tottenham side, and Tuchel will know that any more slip-ups are likely to be punished from here on in.

The Blues are a notoriously potent force on the road however, and Chelsea’s loss at Man City on January 15th remains their only defeat in 14 tussles on the road since the first week of December.

Chelsea were comfortable 3-1 winners against Southampton when the teams last met in October and Tuchel’s side should be able to complete the double over the struggling Saints this weekend.

Safe Bets

Newcastle, Watford and Manchester City all scored at least twice in Southampton’s last three fixtures at St. Mary’s Stadium and the Saints’ leaky defence could be torn apart on more than one occasion by a high-calibre Chelsea side on Saturday. The Blues notched at least two goals in each of their last five away matches and they can be backed at 1.91 to rattle the net over 1.5 times again this weekend.

Get Quick Rich

Southampton have lost three home games on the trot and two of those defeats finished 2-1 in the visiting team’s favour. Chelsea meanwhile, scored exactly two goals in each of their last two games on the road, while they have also conceded exactly once in each of their last three meetings with Southampton. Those records suggest that a stake on the Blues to win 2-1 could be worth your time as a correct score bet at 9.0 odds on Saturday.

Southampton vs Chelsea first goalscorer

With four goals in his last four top flight appearances, Kai Havertz has been Chelsea’s go to guy in the Premier League since February and the German attacker is in strong enough form to back in the first goalscorer market on Saturday. The 22-year-old opened the scoring when Chelsea played Southampton in the League Cup in October and 5.0, the whiz kid is available at a strong price to punish the Saints again.

Southampton vs Chelsea Team News

Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy should be back in Southampton’s squad this weekend, though Lyanco is still some distance away from returning. Armando Broja is inelgible to face his parent club.

Ben Chilwell is Chelsea’s only major injury worry. Thomas Tuchel is likely to make some changes to the XI that featured against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter finals on Wednesday evening.

Starting Lineups

Southampton: Forster – Livramento, Bednarek, Salisu, Walker-Peters – Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Diallo – Elyounoussi, Armstrong, Adams

Chelsea: Mendy – Azpilicueta, Christensen, Rudiger, Marcos Alonso – Roftus-Cheek, Mount, Kovacic – Ziyech, Werner, Havertz

Highlighted Player

Valentino Livramento

Right-back Valentino Livramento spent his formative years with Chelsea’s academy before leaving in search of first team football with Southampton in 2021. The 19-year-old has been earning rave reviews for his performances on the south coast and the Blues must wonder if they’ve let another talented youngster slip through the net.
