This match should be highly competitive as the top two sides of Group D meet in Dublin.

Despite the fact that Ireland currently sit second in the group, it is worth pointing out that they have stumbled a bit in their last couple of outings with just two points taken from a possible six. This means that they are now just two points ahead of Wales in third going into Tuesday’s crunch match.

The Irish have been excellent at the back in this campaign and their Goals Against record of five is the joint-best in Group D. However, they have now failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five matches (including friendlies). The final third has also been a bit of a problem of late with Ireland failing to score over 1.5 goals in any of their last seven games (including friendlies). Additionally, they have only averaged just 1.28 goals per game in their seven qualification matches so far.

There can be no denying that when the Irish fans fill the Aviva Stadium, the atmosphere is one of the best around. This clearly has an good impact on the players’ performances as they have lost just once in their last seven in Dublin (including friendlies). However, they have kept no clean sheets in their last three at the Aviva (including friendlies) whilst they have also drawn their two most recent home qualifying matches.

Serbia currently top Group D by two points after their 3-0 win over Moldova at the weekend. A win here will put them at least four points clear of the team in second, making them likely automatic qualifiers for next year’s World Cup.

Slavoljub Muslin’s side have been fantastic in both boxes so far this campaign with 16 goals scored (by far the best record in the group) and just seven conceded (second-best defensive record in Group D). There are no signs that this form at both ends of the pitch will let up anytime soon with seven goals scored in their last four and just two goals conceded in that time.

Orlovi’s away form has been fantastic during this qualification campaign with no defeats and two wins out of three games on the road. Furthermore, they have scored ten goals and conceded just two in their last four World Cup qualifying matches outside of Serbia.

This will undoubtedly be a tight game and nerve-wracking for both sides. Ireland are excellent at home whilst Serbia are brilliant on their travels so this result is difficult to call. Having said that, I am edging towards a draw. Neither team can really afford to lose this match so I imagine they will both set up pretty conservatively. The draw is priced at 21/10.
