Bookmaker Ratings prediction one: Jason Kokrak to Win (each-way) – 36.00

Bookmaker Ratings prediction two: Russell Knox to Win (each-way) – 67.00

Jason Kokrak to Win (each-way, eight places)

With a string of steady performance behind him, Jason Kokrak looks set for a big effort this week. At number 26 in the world rankings, the three-time PGA Tour winning American is one of the highest ranked players in this field, while he rates as a solid course fit.

Finishing T8, T2 and T13 in the last three runnings of this tournament, Kokrak knows how to play well at Copperhead. One of the better putters in this field in terms of strokes gained: putting, the 36-year-old is currently the best player on tour in terms of average Par 3 score, which bodes very well ahead of a trip to a course that features five Par 3’s.

Russell Knox to WIn (each-way, eight places)

I also really like the look of Russell Knox, who arrives here off the back of an excellent display at TPC Sawgrass, his best performance since finishing T7 at the Sony Open in Hawaii back in January.

The Scot has been playing some steady golf for a while, and there’s plenty to suggest that he can perform well on this track, not least the fact that he’s finished inside T24 or better in each of the last three renewals of the Valspar Championship. Add in that he arrives here in the form of his life, coupled with the fact that nobody in this field has hit more greens in regulation this season, and the 36-year-old starts to stand out as an excellent each-way punt at appealing odds. He’s also the fourth best in this field in terms of strokes gained: approach right now, which is very positive ahead of a week where approach shots will be key.

Preliminary review and prediction for the 2022 Valspar Championship

The PGA Tour stays in Florida this week, and although the action isn’t as prestigious as last week’s PLAYERS, the Valspar Championship is still a notable event. Won last year by Sam Burns, who returns to defend his crown, this competition has been won by some big names, including multiple major winners such as Vijay Singh and Jordan Spieth.

There’s been a real importance placed on accuracy during the Florida swing of the PGA Tour schedule, and that’s not going to change this week. In fact, it might be even more important for players to be precise on the Copperhead Course, which features rolling terrain and no shortage of tree-lined fairways. We saw Cameron Smith manage to win despite being quite wayward off the tee last week, though it’s hard to see that happening here. Finding the short stuff off the tee will be one of the keys to success this week, as will precision on approach, so lookout for those players that rank well in terms of both GIR and Strokes Gained: Approach.

What’s slightly unusual about the Copperhead Course is the fact that it features five Par 3’s, three of which come on the back nine. Keep an eye on those players that score well on Par 3’s. Returning to the importance of accuracy, the last three holes on the Copperhead Course are generally considered some of the toughest in golf, especially outside of the majors, with hazards everywhere.

It’s also going to take someone who’s hot with the flatstick to come out on top this week, and while that may be true most weeks, at Copperhead, putting really is key, as we saw with Sam Burns, who finished the week ranked third for strokes gained: putting last season.

Safe Bet

If you’re looking for a safe bet this week, then take Viktor Hovland to finish in the top ten. The Norwegian once again showed his qualities last week, and although he disappointed coming up 18 on the final day, he still secured a solid T9 finish, his third straight top-ten finish. The world number three also showed a liking for this venue when finishing third here last season, and his strokes gained numbers on that occasion were eye-catching, so don’t be surprised if this rising star is at the right end of the leaderboard come Sunday evening.
