Bookmaker Ratings prediction one: To Win (each-way) – Marc Leishman – 34.00

Bookmaker Ratings prediction two: Top 10 Finish – Mathew Fitzpatrick – 3.75

Marc Leishman to Win (each-way)

It’s now been almost a year since six-time PGA Tour victor got his hands on some silverware, but his game has looked in solid shape of late, while the return to this venue is a big positive for a player who loves to work his way around tough courses.

There was plenty to like about the way Leishman played for most of the week at Riviera a fortnight ago, and there was no shame in finishing T15 in a very tough event. A winner of this tournament in 2017, the Aussie knows how to go well here, posting three additional top-tens, including a second-place finish in 2020.

Of those in this field to have played at least four rounds at Bay Hill in the last five seasons, Marc Leishman ranks as the number four player when it comes to strokes gained: total. Ignore this stat at your peril, and for my money, Leish ranks as an excellent each-way punt this week.

Mathew Fitzpatrick Top 10 Finish

The steady Mathew Fitzpatrick returns to the fray following a week or so on the sidelines with illness, and if he’s in the same sort of mood that saw him finish T10 at the Phoenix a fortnight ago, his name could well be near the top of the leaderboard.

Another player who likes it at Bay Hill, the world number 25 has hit the top ten in each of the last three seasons at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, finishing second in 2019. Currently the second-best on the PGA Tour for strokes gained: approach, Fitzy has the measured game required to do well here, which is why he ranks highly for strokes gained at this venue too, with only nine players in the line-up gaining more strokes on average over the last five seasons.

Additionally, only one player in this field has scored better on average than the Englishman on the PGA Tour this season, which is quite astonishing. Combine this with the info above and the man who hasn’t finished outside the top 12 in his last three events rates as a great top-ten play.

Preliminary review and prediction for the Arnold Palmer Invitational

After Sunday’s exciting finish at the Honda Classic, where Sepp Straka came out on top to claim his first PGA Tour win despite starting the final round several strokes off the lead, those on the PGA Tour will move on to Orlando.

With this tournament being an invitational, a select field of 120 players wil tee it up at Bay Hill this week, with only the top 70 on last year’s money list being guaranteed a spot.

Following on from the theme recently, with both Riviera and PGA National being tough courses to navigate, Bay Hill is not a course that can be torn apart by sheer force and big hitting. A well-rounded approach will be needed to thrive this week, while course experience tends to be more crucial here than at most other tour venues. One particular trait needed for success is the ability to consistently score on Par 5’s.

Safe Bet

If there is such a thing as a safe bet, then ‘Rory McIlroy Top Ten Finish’ might just be it. It’s now been a while since the Northern Irishman walked off the 72nd green as a winner, but he’s found some form of late, playing his way to a solid T10 finish at Riviera recently, while his history in this tournament is quite a rich one. Five top ten finishes at Bay Hill in the last five seasons show a player who gets on well with this venue.
