Mexico is on course for yet another final
Dubbed the kings of CONCACAF, Mexico’s dominance in this tournament is unprecedented. Since 1991, Mexico have featured in nine of 15 finals and won an astonishing eight of them.
Pre-tournament favorites and defending champions, El Tri are playing in their 13th semi-final and remarkably have never lost in this round.
Having not conceded any goals in this addition, Gerardo Martino’s team must be booming in confidence. It took the Mexicans 12 minutes to demolish Honduras in the quarter-final after scoring three between the 26th and 38th minute of the first half resulting in 42% of their goals in the 2021 Gold Cup being scored between the 15-30 minute mark.
Mexico Key Points
- Mexico have won seven of their last ten matches
- In their last ten matches, Mexico scored in seven of them
- The number of clean sheets Mexico had in their last ten match is eight
Canada’s ability will be under a big test
This is Canada’s first Gold Cup semi-final since 2007 after failing at the quarter-final stage in three of the last six editions. The two-time Gold Cup winners have netted ten goals across their four matches so far and they will need that scoring touch in this game. Canada have scored one goal or none in five of their last seven Gold Cup knockout stage matches.
The Canucks are having a great year losing just two games in 15 matches. They recorded their biggest ever win in their history in March by beating the Cayman Islands 11-0. In the quarter-final match, Canada beat Costa Rica 2-0. Despite having the lesser share of ball possession, coach John Herdman’s team created five shots at goal without allowing Costa Rica to have any.
Canada Key Points
- Canada have won nine of their last ten matches
- The average number of goals by Canada in the last ten matches is four
- Canada have failed to score in one of their last ten matches
Mexico vs Canada Prediction
The last time Canada beat Mexico was in the 2000 edition of the Gold Cup. Since then, Mexico have won six times and two matches ended in a draw. Mexico are the favorites to win again as they are in impeccable form.
Canada lost to the USA in the group stages meaning they are still not capable of beating stronger sides. We think currently Mexico are the best team in the tournament and it will take an outstanding performance from coach Herdman’s men to overcome El Tri.
