14:35 Lingfield – Major Muscari @ 5/1

If the early betting is anything to go by then the first handicap on Lingfield’s Saturday card is all about the Shaun Harris trained Culloden, who’s currently as short as 6/4 in places. However, Major Muscari – a horse who happens to the stablemate of the aforementioned Culloden – is the one who really stands out.

It’s been a long time since this one managed to get his head in front, but after a number of encouraging performances in recent times, that long awaited victory might not be far away. Despite putting in a number of eye-catching runs – runs that have seen him go agonisingly close, the nine-year-old’s handicap rating has fallen 4lb below his last winning mark. Off a mark of 55, Major Muscari should be more than capable of getting seriously involved in this sort of contest.

Having finished outside of the places in just four of his 11 runs at Lingfield, a return to this venue bodes well, as does the step back to 6f. The gelding has a number of pleasing pieces of form to his name over this trip on the all-weather, especially recent placed finishes in races that boasted far more depth than this one.

Punters shouldn’t be put off by the selections’ latest efforts; form at Southwell isn’t necessarily relevant, while a 7th place finish at this venue on his penultimate start doesn’t exactly tell the full story. Getting caught widest of all in a big field was just one problem that day. In this race, a similar issue isn’t likely to arise, nor is he likely to find himself 15 lengths of the pace.

Of the opposition, it’s highly debatable whether stablemate Culloden – a horse who’s almost definitely better suited to the minimum trip – is capable of repeating his best form off a mark of 56 over 6f, while Great Expectations has never won away from Southwell on the all-weather, nor has he gone close to doing so, and, therefore looks far too short.

A leap of faith is definitely required when backing a horse who hasn’t won in 29 runs, but this race looks as good an opportunity as any for this course winner to finally return to the winners enclosure.
