These two sides have vastly different aims this season with Birmingham looking to push for the promotion spots whilst Bolton are simply looking to survive in the division following their promotion from League One last term.

Birmingham managed to recover from going 1-0 down in the first minute against Bristol City at the weekend to record a 2-1 victory. They will no doubt be looking to make it an even better start to their home campaign on Tuesday night by picking up another three points against Bolton.

Apart from their awful run under Gianfranco Zola last season, Blues have been known as a defensively solid outfit for a couple of years now. However, they have so far failed to keep a clean sheet in their three competitive games this campaign. Additionally, although they put five past Crawley in last week’s League Cup tie, goals have been a problem for Birmingham for a while and, unfortunately for them, Che Adams, who scored a hat trick against Crawley, picked up a hamstring injury against Bristol. This had initially meant that Birmingham had just one fit striker going into this match against Bolton. However, they have now snapped up highly-rated striker Isaac Vassell from Luton Town and it will be interesting to see how he does. Expect him to play a part on Tuesday.

Manager Harry Redknapp has said on several occasions how much he loves St. Andrews and the Birmingham City crowd. This backing, which has been bolstered by Redknapp taking charge at the club, will have a huge role on Tuesday night as they look to make it three home wins on the spin in all competitions.

Despite the fact that Bolton have yet to pick up maximum points in a league game so far this season, there is still a fair bit for their fans to be encouraged by and it has not been a disastrous start by any means.

The most prominent of those encouraging factors has been the Trotters’ performance in the final third which has seen them score five goals in their opening three matches in all competitions. However, they have failed to match their good performances up front with ones at the back and, like Tuesday’s opponents Birmingham, they have yet to keep a clean sheet this season.

Phil Parkinson’s side are actually unbeaten on their travels this season with a win and a draw in all competitions. However, away form in the Championship has been a massive problem for a few years with their last win on the road in this division coming all the way back in April 2015. The Trotters failed to win an away league match in their relegation season of 2015/16.

Birmingham are the favourites here and, when you look at their recent home form, it is easy to see why. Che Adams’s injury is a blow for the home side but I still think they have enough about them to put a couple past this dodgy Bolton backline. Furthermore, Blues have a very good record against Bolton in recent times having won each of the last three meetings. Birmingham City to Win and Over 1.5 Goals Total is priced at a profitable 5/4.
