Monday’s Russian Premier League clash sees two sides right next to each other in the table go head-to-head. Neither of these two sides will be under the threat of relegation this season but, at the same time, neither are likely to be in with a shot at the European spots.

Anzhi are, quite predictably, one of the most unpredictable sides in the division! One week they’re beating Ural and then following up with a respectable draw at home to Zenit St. Petersburg before losing against relegation-threatened Krylia Sovetov.

It was a similar story last season which is why they founds themselves inconvenienced by the trouble of a relegation play-off – a play-off they duly came through. Whilst former head coach of the Czech Republic Pavel Vrba is undoubtedly a good manager, judging by his style of play, he is not the sort of boss you need to keep a level of consistency. In his homeland, he was famed for an attacking and open style of play which, in Russia, can cost a team dear as opposition defences are generally quite good at holding out before springing on the counter – taking the chances that the dominant team did not.

Despite this, Anzhi should still survive this season as they have more than enough quality in their squad to sit comfortably in mid-table.

Opponents Terek Grozny are pretty much the antithesis of Anzhi and are usually one of the most solid sides in the division – conceding very few chances and goals, but then not really creating much either.

However, this season has been a completely different story for Rashid Rakhimov as they are lacking any real consistency and are leaking goals (14) – the worst defensive record in the division. If it was not for their poor defending, they would be a lot higher than seventh.

Having said that, after two losses against two teams in the top five in CSKA Moscow and Amkar Perm, they have managed to rectify their form with a draw and a win. Although it will worry the management and fans that they still conceded a goal against bottom of the table Orenburg – who have only scored three all season.

This will be a tough test for both sides and, with both teams so inconsistent over their nine matches so far, I find it almost impossible to pick a winner. Anzhi are the favourites with home advantage but Terek certainly have the squad to pick up a positive result in Dagestan.

With this in mind, two more neutral bets look the way to go here. Firstly, ‘Both Teams to Score’ at 5/4 is very appealing. Two sides with decent attacks, as well as shoddy defences makes this bet stand out and it would be surprising if both teams didn’t each notch a goal.

Secondly, ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ at 9/5. For some reason the bookies heavily favour a low-scoring encounter here, but, with these two defences, I just can’t see it. As previously mentioned, neither side are great at the back, but going forward they look good so we may see that come to fruition here.

Furthermore, Anzhi’s last two home games involved more than two goals, whilst Terek away matches involving other teams in and around the top of the Russian Premier League have also seen three or more goals go in.
