William Hill

William Hill is one of the first UK bookies, the founder of William Hill betting company. He was born in 1903 in Birmingham. Hill first started accepting bets at the age of 12. In 1919, he served in the volunteer corps that fought against the supporters of Irish independence. After his return in 1925, Hill tried to open his first betting company, but seasoned punters in horsebetting made him go bankrupt. But that did not stop him, and in 1929 he moved to London, where he once more began accepting bets. In 1934, William Hill opened his first official betting company by finding a loophole in British law. In October 1971, he had a heart attack during October Sales horse race in Newmarket, Suffolk. On October 16, one of the most outstanding bookmakers in history left this world at the age of 68.
