Top 5 Promising Tunisian Players in FIFA World Cup 2022

Tunisia, one of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations competitors, advanced to the competition’s quarter-finals. Although Tunisia got knocked out by Burkina Faso, Tunisian players remain among the most talented ones in Africa.

Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane – Midfielder – Espérance de Tunis 

Romdhane has become a household name among Tunisians. He emerged as one of the top-rated footballers to have come from the Tunisian Ligue 1. Romdhane has been with the Espérance first squad since July 2018, after he moved from the U19 team.

One year later, Romdhane earned his first call-up to the national team. He made his debut in October 2019 in a friendly encounter with Libya. Romdhane has gone ahead to make 18 appearances for the Carthage Eagles. 

Romdhane put in a decent shift during the World Cup qualifications. He was a part of the squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year. 

At 22 years, the talented footballer has already managed to win a couple of titles. The titles are two CAF Champions League titles, four Tunisian Ligue 1 titles, and four Tunisian Super Cup trophies with Espérance.

The Tunisian powerhouse is close to clinching its 5th straight league title this season. Romdhane has contributed immensely to the feat with 4 goals in 17 matches. 

He was also in scintillating form in the CAF Champions League. There he bagged 4 goals in 9 games after Espérance reached the quarter-final stage.

Galatasaray of Turkey has been linked with a deal for the player. However, they are yet to come close to the price of €5 million that Espérance has set on him.

Hannibal Mejbri – Midfielder – Manchester United 

Having represented France with the U16 and U17 teams, Tunisia national team invited Mejbri in May 2021. Thus he has committed his international future to the country of birth of his parents. 

He played his first senior match on June 5, 2021, where Tunisia prevailed with a 1-0 victory over DR Congo. 

Hannibal made included in Tunisia’s squad for the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup hosted by Qatar last year. The young talent started in all five of Tunisia’s games as they progressed to the final. Hannibal was named man-of-the-match in the group stage and semi-finals against the UAE and Egypt.

He made the final list for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and also played in the World Cup playoff against Mali.

Mejbri signed for Manchester United in August 2021 from AS Monaco for a reported fee of €10 million. 

Despite being just 17, Mejbri settled quickly into Manchester’s youth teams, progressing to the U23 team. He signed a new contract with United in March 2021 after showing glimpses of a bright future. Then Hannibal went ahead to win the Denzil Haroun Reserve Player of the Year award.

He made his first-team debut in May 2021 when he replaced Juan Mata in the last Premier League game of the season.

Montassar Omar Talbi – Centre-back – Rubin Kazan 

One of the emerging talents that Tunisia will count on at the World Cup this year is Talbi. He was instrumental in the thick of affairs of the Carthage Eagles when he debuted with the national team.

On March 28, 2021, he made his senior Tunisian national team debut. It was a 2-1 win against Equatorial Guinea in a 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

He was later included in the squad for the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup, although the Russian club didn’t release him. He later joined the team and played against Egypt in the semi-finals. Tunisia won.

Talbi played 4 out of 6 games in the group stages in the World Cup qualifications. 

He made the final squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. Since then he has cemented his position in the central defense.

Talbi joined Rubin Kaza from the Italian side, Benevento, in August 2021. In his first spell in the Russian Premier League, Talbi was crucial for his new team. He featured 27 times in all competitions in the 2021-22 campaign. He is a towering center-back who stands 1.90 meters.

Aissa Billal Laidouni – Midfielder – Ferencváros 

Laidouni will definitely be a face on the Tunisian team for the 2022 World Cup. He will expectedly make an impact for the Carthage Eagles to chalk success at the Mundial in Qatar. He has been an integral member of the team since his making his debut in March last year. 

Laidouni played in every single match during the World Cup qualifications. He also played the 180 minutes in the two-legged playoff against Mali in Bamako and in Radès. Moreover, he featured in all games at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon. During the competition, Tunisia got eliminated in the quarter-finals, losing to Burkina Faso.

The France-born central midfielder started his career at SCO Angers. He enjoyed loan spells at Les Herbiers and FC Chambly before making a permanent move to Romanian club FC Voluntari.

After two seasons in Romania, he moved to Hungarian giants, Ferencváros. He has become a cult hero with 79 appearances, 7 goals, and 12 assists during the seasons 2020-21 and 2021-22.

Laidouni played an epic role for Ferencváros to win double in the past season clinching in the Hungarian League and Cup titles.

Anis Ben Slimane – Midfielder – Brøndby IF 

The 21-year-old midfielder will be on a plane for the Mundial in Qatar later this year. He is one of the most promising talents in Jalel Kadri’s Tunisia squad for the global showpiece. Slimane has been a constant feature and a trusted member of the Tunisian team since his debut.

He scored on his debut when the Carthage Eagles beat Sudan 3-0 in an international friendly fixture on October 9, 2020, under former coach Mondher Kebaier.

The Denmark-born player missed only one game during the World Cup qualifications having played in the other five matches. He was also involved in the play-off. Slimane also played every match at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon earlier this year as the Maghrebian side reached the quarter-final stage only to lose to Burkina Faso.

Overall, he has 20 caps as a Carthage Eagle where he has scored four times and provided two assists across all competitions. 

Slimane had a decent campaign in the past season with Brøndby in the Danish Superliga having made 31 appearances and scored twice and assisted the other five goals.

He also featured prominently in the UEFA Europa League, playing in all matches as the club exited after the group stages where they competed with Olympique Lyon, Sparta Prague, and eventual finalists Rangers FC.
