Chelsea Negotiating Contract Extension for Thiago Silva, Kante and Mount’s Futures Uncertain
Chelsea FC has reportedly entered into advanced negotiations with veteran defender Thiago Silva over a contract extension, a move that highlights the player’s remarkable performances and leadership abilities.
The renewal, which is expected to extend his deal until 2024, comes amid a dramatic transfer window in which the club spent over £300 million on younger players.
In addition to Silva, Chelsea is also reportedly in talks with midfielder N’Golo Kante over a contract extension, although the Frenchman is said to be reluctant to accept the terms of a two-year deal with an option for a third year. Instead, the 31-year-old is hoping for a three-plus-one agreement, as he looks to recover from an injury-plagued season.
While the focus on players with expiring contracts has overshadowed those with only 18 months remaining on their deals, co-owner Todd Boehly has reportedly taken charge of negotiating Mason Mount’s proposed seven-year contract.
The young midfielder, who has been Chelsea’s player of the season for the past two years, is among the lowest paid at the club and is seeking a salary on par with his England teammates.
However, Chelsea has yet to offer such terms, citing the security that longer contracts provide for the club’s recent January signings, who earn an average of around £70,000 per week, well below the market rate for top-level players.
With Liverpool and other top Premier League clubs expected to test Chelsea’s resolve in the summer, the new regime may be inclined to sell Mount if they are unable to meet his demands.
